This piece for violin and piano started out, as all of the Sentimentations did, as one of the piano preludes in Calendar. Working with Garry Ianco, I changed the key, greatly altered the piano part, and added a whole new layer with the violin. It’s so interesting working this way. It caused me to then make some additions to the piano prelude itself. Though based on the same tune, each piece is unique. February, the piano prelude, is in g sharp minor; Sentimentation II is in a minor. This alone changes the color. Also, the violin writing takes a somewhat wistful piano prelude and makes it something more agitated and passionate.
